An ell (from Proto-Germanic *alinō, cognate with Latin ulna) is a unit of measurement, originally a cubit, i.e., approximating the length of a man's arm from the elbow ("elbow" means the bend or bow of the ell or arm) to the tip of the middle finger, or about 18 inches (457 mm); in later usage, any of several longer units.
1 ell = 1.5 paces | 4 ell = 6 paces |
1.5 ell = 2.25 paces | 4.5 ell = 6.75 paces |
2 ell = 3 paces | 5 ell = 7.5 paces |
2.5 ell = 3.75 paces | 5.5 ell = 8.25 paces |
3 ell = 4.5 paces | 6 ell = 9 paces |
A pace is a unit of length consisting either of one normal walking step (~0.75 m), or of a double step, returning to the same foot (~1.5 m). Like other traditional measurements, paces started as informal units but have since been standardized, often with the specific length set according to a typical brisk or military marching stride.
